Source of Volumetric Information

Representative sampling ( example Appendix 3) by preharvest assessment for total and merchantable volume from basal area sweeps ( BA), d.b.h class and height measurement. This was done by the previous owners of the block in preparation of the SFM permit in July 1996.

Sampling

6 temporary sampling plot were established across the N/S axis of the Terrrace Block sub-compartment ( 5.8 ha ) in July 1996, being taken as representative for beech in Stainart Forest ( 74.83 ha ).

Prism basal area sweeps with factor 4 prism, plus measurement of diameter breast height provided an estimate of basal area by tree species and diameter class. Dominant tree height plus potentially merchantable height were measured for red and silver beech at each plot using a Suunto clinometer. Spiegel relascope estimates of tree form factor were previously obtained from nearby beech forest in the Maruia Valley ( f=0.51).
